Colina dos Piscos – A Place to Gather, Rest and Celebrate in the Heart of Portugal Nestled in the centre of Portugal, Colina dos Piscos sits on a terraced basin enriched by abundant natural springs, creating a truly unique and tranquil setting. The vibrant presence of wildlife and rich flora have long defined the soul of this place—particularly the “Pisco,” a shy little bird known for its melodic song and the distinctive orange patch on its chest, from which the estate takes its name.
The land has been occupied since ancient times. During the Middle Ages and up to the 19th century, it was cultivated by the Cistercian monks, who played a significant role in shaping the region.
Following the Portuguese Liberal Revolution in 1820, the estate became a casal—a small rural homestead—known as “Casal Pisco.” It was then exchanged into the hands of an aristocratic family, and alongside agricultural use, the site embraced ceramic production, which continued until the mid-20th century.
The main house, built around 1850, reflects the romantic architectural style of the era. It was the vision of a nature-loving physician who made this land his home. The large ceramic and timber-built factory, still standing today with its striking chimney, is a testament to the estate’s industrial past. Other original elements—such as the stone threshing floor and auxiliary farm buildings—add to the estate’s distinctive charm.
Colina dos Piscos, as it is known today, is the result of a thoughtful and loving restoration. In recent years, we have revitalised the estate, transforming the main house into a welcoming and elegant guest retreat, enhanced by new access paths, lush gardens, and serene water features including ponds and lakes. Across the estate, various spaces invite exploration and reflection—from the old threshing terrace overlooking the water, now used as an outdoor art studio, to the fig tree tank, a peaceful meditation spot, and the surrounding pine grove, evoking the atmosphere of a romantic woodland. Colina dos Piscos is more than a place to stay—it’s a place to gather, to create, to celebrate. Its beauty only makes sense when it is shared.
